Natak Mesh Nucleus
Natak Mesh Nucleus
The Natak Mesh Nucleus is a portable, battery-powered field networking platform built to keep ATAK users, vehicles, teams, and remote positions connected when cellular service or existing infrastructure is unavailable.
Each Nucleus combines two complementary networks in one system: a high-speed 2.4 GHz WiFi mesh for ATAK, voice, video, imagery, file transfer, and other IP traffic, plus an integrated RAK4631 Meshtastic LoRa radio for longer-range position and messaging.
Phones, tablets, laptops, and other end-user devices connect through the Nucleus' separate 5 GHz WiFi access point, allowing the mesh to function much like a conventional wireless network. Nucleus nodes automatically discover one another, route traffic across multiple hops, and reroute when network conditions change. No dedicated master node or repeater is required.
Built for ATAK
The Nucleus allows ATAK devices to communicate across the WiFi mesh without requiring cellular service. Compatible ATAK position and chat traffic can also be bridged across the LoRa network, providing an additional communication path when distance, terrain, or obstacles begin to limit WiFi connectivity.
This gives the system two different tools for two different jobs:
WiFi Mesh — High-bandwidth ATAK traffic, voice, video, photos, files, and general IP networking.
LoRa / Meshtastic — Longer-range position and messaging where maintaining connectivity is more important than bandwidth.
The onboard LoRa radio can also be switched for use with the standard Meshtastic application over Bluetooth.
Self-Healing, Multi-Hop Networking
Additional Nucleus nodes can be positioned between teams, vehicles, buildings, elevated locations, or terrain features to extend coverage.
Because every node participates in the mesh, the network can scale from a simple two-node link to a larger distributed field network. If one route becomes unavailable, traffic can automatically move through another available node.
This makes the Nucleus well suited for mobile teams, temporary command posts, vehicle networks, remote observation positions, events, training, emergency response, and other situations where traditional networking infrastructure may not be practical.
Offline or Connected
The Nucleus does not require internet access to operate.
When internet connectivity is available, however, Ethernet can be used to connect a Nucleus to sources such as Starlink, a cellular router, or an existing wired network and distribute that connection across the mesh.
This allows the same network to operate completely off-grid when necessary while still providing reach-back capability when an internet connection becomes available.
Available Configurations
Multiple Nucleus configurations are available. The core mesh networking capabilities remain consistent across the platform, while onboard server capabilities depend on the selected configuration.
Standard Nucleus
Includes the core Nucleus networking platform:
2.4 GHz 802.11s WiFi mesh
Separate 5 GHz client WiFi access point
Integrated RAK4631 Meshtastic LoRa radio
ATAK position and messaging bridge over LoRa
Ethernet WAN/LAN connectivity
Internet gateway capability
Browser-based management and monitoring
Server-Equipped Nucleus
Adds onboard TAK server functionality for deployments that require a portable server operating directly on the field network.
Certain server-equipped configurations may also include MediaMTX video services, allowing compatible video feeds to be distributed to ATAK clients across the network.
Server and video functionality varies by configuration, so select the appropriate Nucleus variant when ordering.
Browser-Based Management
Nucleus configuration and monitoring are handled through a browser-based interface, eliminating the need for a dedicated management application.
Users can view information such as:
Node status
Mesh link quality
Network throughput
Wireless congestion
Network information
LoRa operating mode
This allows deployment and troubleshooting from a phone, tablet, or computer connected to the network.
Field-Tested Range
Natak Mesh has conducted real-world outdoor testing of both the WiFi and LoRa portions of the system.
Under favorable elevated, open-line-of-sight conditions, the Nucleus demonstrated WiFi mesh connectivity at approximately 5.5 km.
During the same testing, the LoRa network maintained communication with no packet loss through 12.26 km, at which point the available test area ended.
Actual operating range can vary substantially based on antenna height, terrain, buildings, vegetation, interference, and node placement. These distances represent specific field-test conditions and should not be considered guaranteed range.
